Highlights

More information

Urquhart Castle is one of Scotland’s most iconic historic sites, set along the banks of Loch Ness with sweeping views across the water. Its origins date back to the early medieval period, and over the centuries it played a key role in the region’s turbulent history. The castle changed hands multiple times during conflicts between rival clans and the Crown, leaving behind a layered story reflected in the ruins seen today.

What remains of the castle offers a clear impression of its former scale and importance. Visitors can still see sections of the great tower, defensive walls, and the remains of living quarters, all of which highlight how the site once functioned as both a stronghold and a residence.

Today, Urquhart Castle combines its rich history with one of the most scenic settings in Scotland. The open layout allows visitors to move freely around the site, taking in views of Loch Ness while exploring the remains at their own pace. It’s a place where history, landscape, and atmosphere come together, making it a memorable stop for those looking to experience both heritage and natural beauty.
